La Ticla - too big, too gnarly
I just got back from 4 days of living in my car and surfing La Ticla in Michoacan. The first two days were 2X+ overhead with short interval dirt bombs all over the place. There was so much water moving around that it was primarily a paddle-fest. I didn’t see anyone get any surf to speak of. There had been heavy rains in the mountains so the river was running fast and and brown - it was nasty to have to wade across with logs, sticks, and god knows what else coursing by you. I was expecting that the sandbars were being built up and that, as the swell decreased, we’d see some fun lefts off of the point. No such action - by the time I left, the waves where just starting to show what they were capable of but, alas, I was out of time. I wanted to get out of there before the puente weekend crowd made travel impossible.
None the less, it was a fun trip. In addition to meeting some really cool folks, I headed south along the coast a few KMs when la ticla was maxing out and found a beautiful cove with a massive rock right in the middle. When the fat south swell would smack against this mini-mountain, the waves would part, and then rejoin behind to form tight little A-frames. Even when the beach breaks were closed down and the wind was up, this little gem performed.
